Workshop Leader: Sallye Coyle

This is an exciting opportunity for 180 Studios.  We are flying in a Guest teacher Sallye Coyle from ShopBot.   This is a very in depth class that will turn anyone into an expert at the ShopBot.  This class normally retails for $399 from ShopBot in Portland, Oregon. We are offering it for $250 for non members and $200 for members.

In the realm of STEM and STEAM education, Sallye emphasizes designing across digital fabrication platforms such as CNC machines (ShopBot), laser cutters, and 3D printers. She is comfortable using VCarve Pro/Aspire and Fusion 360 CAD/CAM software, and familiar with graphic-based softwares such as Corel, Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator.

On the business and manufacturing side, Sallye works with customers to analyze their interests and needs, then trains them to use their ShopBot tools creatively and efficiently. Sallye uses her own ShopBots as a glass artist, and as a contractor through 100kGarages. Her passions have taken her around the world, working with Fab Labs, educators, artists, and manufacturing customers.

Sallye leads ShopBot Tools’ Community Outreach programs. She also works with TIES, FabFoundation, Maker Spaces and School Districts to design and install Digital Maker Spaces and provide Professional Development.

Intro to ShopBot Tools CNC (2D and Engraving Files)

·         ShopBot Safety and Basis Use (SBU)

·         Comparison of VCarve Pro and Fusion 360 CAD/CAM software to design and prepare files for machining (2D and engraving toolpaths):

o    Introduction of Workflow for CNC using VCarve Pro

§  CAD: What and Where

§  CAM: How

§  Creating code for the ShopBot CNC

o    Intro to Fusion 360 workspace

§  Project 1: Open faced box (single body)

§  Sketch (create vectors)

§  Extrude (create 3D Body from vectors)

§  User defined Parameters

§  Exporting files for laser cutter or 2D CNC toolpaths (sheets goods .dxf)

§  Exporting files for 3D printing or 3D carving (.stl)

§  Setting up a ShopBot for machining from VCarve Pro CAM

§  Import .dxf and machine by pocketing for depth (Z depth added in CAM)

§  Import .stl and machine by using 3D roughing and 3D finish pass (Z depth added from 3D design file)


·         Fusion 360: Machining 3D Models out of Sheet Goods: creating a finger joint box

o    Working with Components

o    Transferring individual components to the sheet goods for prep for CNC

·         Introduction to Fusion 360 CAM set up for use with ShopBot CNC

o    Selecting the Toolpath option

o    Bit selection, feeds and speeds

§  Creating a tool library in Fusion 360

o    Setting up origins and cut depths

o    Generating and checking ShopBot code

·         Hold down techniques for prototyping vs. small- and large-scale production


Intro to CNC (3D Carving 3D Files)

·         Working with Fusion 360 to create 3D models

o    Create Tools (Extrude, Revolve, Loft, etc)

·         Intro to 3D carving with ShopBot CNC   

o    Importing 3D files (.stl) into VCarve/Aspire for machining

o    Toolpathing 3D files in Fusion 360

o    Creating roughing pass vs finish pass

·         (Option: Comparison of VCarve Pro vs. Aspire CAD/CAM software)

·         Comparison of time/pricing for 2D vs 3D carving (and 3D printing)


·         Time for Individual Projects
